The Department of Statistics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was founded in 1982. We have strived to provide students state-of-the-art statistical education as well as to conduct cutting-edge statistical research. The Department has accommodated world-class faculty members with diverse research areas including statistical finance and risk management science, statistical theory and methodology, machine learning & big data analytics, biostatistics and bioinformatics, and other areas of cross-disciplinary research. Various research fundings and equipment would be offered by the Department for enhancing teaching and research.

(I) Professor – (240002MG)

Applications are invited for one tenured faculty position at the level of Full Professor for all areas of Statistics (Department’s strategic areas: https://www.sta.cuhk.edu.hk/research/#dos-tab1).

1. Duties: (a) providing academic leadership and contributing to the achievement of excellence in teaching and research; (b) contributing to research and teaching activities of the Department; (d) leading and participating in research, scholarly publications, and obtaining external competitive research grants; (e) leading and participating in the administration of the Department as required; (f) participating and contributing to the University, profession and community; and (g) performing any other duties as assigned.

2. Qualifications for Appointment: (a) a Ph.D. degree in statistics or related field with distinguished achievement in their field of scholarship; (b) excellent record of research and peer-reviewed scholarly publications with an international impact; (c) excellent accomplishments in obtaining external competitive research grants; (d) Impactful research that makes a significant contribution to policy, community and practice settings is also advantageous; (e) outstanding reputation with excellent contribution in curriculum development, course design and teaching/learning methodologies ; (f) demonstrated academic leadership in higher education; (g) recognized standing in the academic/professional community; and (h) applicants with international exposure / background are highly preferred.

(II) Assistant Professors – (240002MH)

Applications are invited for two tenure-track faculty positions at the level of Assistant Professor for all areas of Statistics (Department’s strategic areas: http://www.sta.cuhk.edu.hk/research/#dos-tab1). Applicants should have (i) a Ph.D. degree in statistics or related field; and (ii) high-quality research output and a strong teaching track record. Applicants with international exposure / background are highly preferred.

Appointments will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years initially commencing in August 2025, which, subject to mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment or substantiation later.

(III) Assistant Computer Officer (240002V5)

Closing date: 14 December 2024

As a member of the technical team, the appointee will be responsible for:

  • Providing support and management services for the Department’s IT infrastructure and systems;
  • Administering Linux-based and Windows servers, PCs, Macs, printers, network equipment, and firewall to ensure optimal performance and security;
  • Managing public IP gateway, configuring SSH tunnelling and jump server, managing server port for departmental public IP addresses.

High Performance Computing (HPC) and Cloud Administration:

  • Setting up and managing HPC cluster platforms for research and teaching activities within the Department;
  • Coordinating with hardware vendors and support services for maintenance and repair of HPC equipment;
  • Maintaining Linux virtual machines (VMs) in Azure cloud computing platform for instructional purposes;
  • Monitoring system performance and perform health checks to ensure the optimal functioning of IT systems.

Grant Proposals and Upgrade Initiatives:

  • Assisting Chairman to draft proposals for equipment grant applications, focusing on areas such as computer laboratories upgrades and HPC resources;
  • Planning and executing Department’s system/networking/Computer Laboratories’ infrastructure upgrades and maintenance.

Technical and Procurement’s Support on computing equipment / facility:

  • Providing day-to-day technical support to the Department for learning, teaching and research activities;
  • Offering Procurement’s support (computing equipment) for staff;
  • Managing the operation of Departmental computer laboratories;
  • Providing consultation for programming languages including but not limited to C, Fortran, Python, R, Matlab, Mathematica, CUDA, LaTeX, SAS, SPSS, open source software, Learning Management System (Blackboard), and Video Conferencing Tools such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams;
  • Acting as Departmental IT representative;
  • Undertaking other tasks as assigned by the Chairman or his delegates.

Applicants should have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related disciplines;
  • Several years of relevant post-qualification experience in academic institutions is an advantage;
  • Scientific computing knowledge in Linux cluster with GPU is a must;
  • Proficiency in Windows, Windows Server, Mac OS and common desktop applications;
  • Good knowledge of various programming languages such as Python, R, open source software, etc.;
  • Experience in website content management, social media publishing and multimedia applications such as Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere etc. is highly desirable;
  • Good analytical, problem-solving, organisational and communication skills;
  • Good command of spoken and written English and Chinese, proficiency in Putonghua is an advantage.

Appointment will initially be made on a 1-year contract, renewable subject to good performance and mutual agreement.
