An Overview
The programme is organised by the Department
of Statistics at the Chinese University of Hong
Kong. It focuses on data analysis skills and explores
core areas of applied and business statistics.
This is a part-time taught programme that is based
primarily on coursework. Students must complete
a minimum of 8 electives.
Each course consists of a three-hour lecture each
week throughout a term of 14 weeks. Classes are
held on weekday evenings or Saturday afternoons.
The expected completion time is two years.
The programme serves a wide range of audiences.
It will be suitable for executives who need to
interpret statistical results to define policies;
for professionals from both the private and public
sectors who are obliged to collect and analyse
data; and for educators and practitioners in education
and public health agencies who appreciate the
effective use of data as a crucial element for
enhancing the quality of society.
About the Department of Statistics
The Department of Statistics at the Chinese University
of Hong Kong was founded in 1982. It is committed
to spearheading the design of high-quality and
up-to-date statistical education for the community.
The department organises various undergraduate
and postgraduate programmes, leading to the degrees
of BSc in Statistics with specialization in Applied
Statistics or Data Science and Business Statistics,
BSc in Risk Management Science, MPhil in Statistics,
MPhil and MSc in Risk Management Science, MSc
in Data Science and Business Statistics, and PhD
in Statistics.
The success of these programmes can be seen by
their popularity in our community and the high
quality of the students admitted. Our Risk Management
Science programmes have attracted students of
a high calibre and our undergraduate statistics
programme was ranked one of the three most popular
in the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2002.
Qualifications for Admission
Applicants must fulfil the “General Qualifications
for Admission” (http://www2.cuhk.edu.hk/gss/entry.php) as stipulated by the Graduate
School.
They should have obtained a Bachelor’s
degree from a recognized university.
They must fulfil the “English Language Proficiency
Requirement”.

Other University Requirements
- Students are required to pass the IT Proficiency
Test (before they graduate).
- Students must have attained a minimum cumulative
GPA of 2.0.
Schedule and Period of Study
The programme is offered on a part-time basis.
Students who take two courses each term can complete
their studies in two years. Each course consists
of a three-hour lecture each week throughout a
term of 14 weeks. Classes are held on weekday
evenings or Saturday afternoons.
Examinations
There is no comprehensive examination for the
programme. Students shall be assessed on the basis
of their performance in the courses for which
they have registered. Criteria for assessment
may include any combination of the following:
class work, written work, test, examination, or
any other specified criteria.
Tuition Fee
$36,000 per annum (provisional).
Others
Students shall observe all rules and regulations
prescribed by the University authorities.

Applicants can submit applications via the
Internet through Online application. Paper
application forms are also obtainable at the
Graduate School Office (Room G01, G/F., Academic
Building No.1, The Chinese University of Hong
Kong, Shatin, N.T.).

Completed application forms and required

relevant divisions, as specified in the "Notes
for Applicants" of the application form. All
supporting documents, including transcripts from
the universities attended by the applicants and
confidential recommendations from two referees,
must reach the relevant divisions before the
application deadline.

application, should quote the "Application No."
generated for their applications when they send
the hardcopies of their supporting documents to
